I accidentally found an old letter in my mother's chest.
In the letter, a man whose name I had never heard wrote that he was waiting for her at the train station on August 20, 1953, to “start a new life together.” The date was a month after my mother's wedding.
I did not dare to ask her about this letter for a long time.
When I read it, I was so embarrassed...because she and my father have an incredible relationship and the kind of love that everyone dreamed of. And this letter meant that my mom had some secrets.
When I finally asked her, she smiled and said: “He was really waiting, but I have already chosen another life. But these letters remind me that I could have been different.”
