Mountain survival in bad weather: how to stay safe and stay calm
Dec 20, 2023

How to stay calm, keep warm, and find shelter in adverse conditions? In this blog post, we'll take a look at some basic tips for surviving in the mountains in bad weather to help you avoid danger and stay safe even when circumstances seem hopeless.

Bad weather in the mountains is not uncommon. Heavy rains, snowfalls, fogs, or even storms can quickly change circumstances, creating threats to those at altitude. Here are some important strategies to help you survive if the weather suddenly worsens:

Stay calm and assess the situation
The most important thing to do in bad weather is to stay calm. Panic can lead to mistakes. First, assess the situation: how strong is the storm or snowfall? How quickly can it get worse? It is important to have a clear understanding of your capabilities and limitations.

Find shelter
If you are in the mountains and the weather is getting worse, Finding Shelter is the first step to safety. Depending on where you are, you can find shelter under rocks, in natural caves, or build a temporary tent using sticks, wooden branches, and a rain cover. If you have a tent with you, put it up as soon as possible.

Stay dry
Moisture is one of the biggest threats to your health in the mountains during bad weather. A wet body quickly loses heat, which can lead to hypothermia. Try to keep yourself dry by using waterproof layers of clothing or shelter. In case of rain or snow, be sure to protect your belongings to avoid getting your gear wet.

Keep warm
Worsening weather is usually accompanied by a decrease in temperature, which increases the risk of hypothermia. Wear several layers of clothing for better thermal insulation, add extra layers if you feel cold. Keep your feet warm, as your hands and feet often become the first parts of your body to freeze. Your goal is to keep warm, so move around to maintain blood circulation, but avoid excessive physical activity.

Don't get distracted by orientation
Bad weather can make it difficult for you to navigate, but it's important not to stop without a plan of action. If you don't have a tent or shelter, find a safe place to spend the night, at least for a few hours, until the storm subsides. At the same time, check the map or compass so that you don't get lost.

Stay in touch with others
If you are going to the mountains in company or with a guide, stay in touch, maintain regular signals to know that everyone is safe. If you are on a solo hike, if possible, have a means of communication with you (walkie-talkie or mobile phone) for emergencies.

Check the weather forecast before leaving
The best preparation is to know what awaits you. Before you go to the mountains, be sure to check the weather forecast and prepare for possible changes. Avoid traveling in the mountains in conditions of bad weather forecasts or severe turbulence, if possible.
